Optine's journey began inside a London teaching hospital, where one of our founders, a doctor, experienced how outdated scheduling systems drove burnout and workforce instability. The issue wasn't the people; it was the broken coordination systems around them.

Her partner, a digital transformation specialist with deep operational experience, realised these problems weren’t just part of the job. They were signs of a system trying to manage impossible levels of coordination with tools that were never built for it. No amount of quick fixes or tweaks to siloed scheduling software could keep up with the real-world complexity of staffing a hospital. What was missing was a way to plan ahead, connect the dots, and reduce the constant pressure on the people holding everything together.

So together, they started building something different: an intelligent workforce system that responds in real time, fits naturally into clinical workflows, adapts as staff needs and preferences change, and shares work fairly rather than pushing the burden onto individuals.

To help realise this paradigm shift in rostering systems, two friends joined: Daniel, a King's College graduate, brought optimisation algorithms expertise from his work in operations research, and Baekhan added engineering depth from building and scaling platforms and AI infrastructure. This gave the team the capability to build software robust enough for healthcare.

Staff absorb operational risk through personal sacrifice. This is neither sustainable nor fair.

We're building the AI operations layer healthcare has been missing: software that anticipates crises, negotiates fair solutions, and strengthens workforce stability. What started as one doctor's frustration is now a mission developed in collaboration with NHS leaders nationwide.
